- Abstract
- SUMMARYSeveral reactions of N,N’-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato)cobalt (II), CoSaEn, are reported. By reduction with sodium, the corresponding monoanion and the dianion have been isolated as the sodium derivatives. Oxidation of CoSaEn occurs very readily with formation of the iodo derivative in very good yield. The monosodiumderivative is a strong nucleophilic reagent and reacts with a number of alkylhalidesand withacetylch1orideto~veder~rativesbfthetypeRCoSaEnorRCoSaEn-Bwhere R is CH3, C2H5, (CH&CH, n-C4H9, C6H,CH2, CsH5, CH3C0 and B is H,Oor C5H5N. Some of the alkyl compounds have also been prepared by the Grignardmethod from [CoSaEn]I. Chemical evidence shows the direct attachment of thealkyl group to cobalt. The magnetic susceptibilities of the monosodium and iododerivatives have been measured between 90°K and room temperature. The 5gConuclear magnetic resonances for some of the organometallic derivatives suggest thatthese compounds should better be regarded as cobalt (III) derivatives bonded to acarbanion.
